Graduate Student Assistantships (GSIs, GSRAs, & GSSAs)

There are three types of graduate assistantships on campus, Graduate Student Research Assistants (GSRA)*, Graduate Student Instructors (GSI)**, and Graduate Student Staff Assistants (GSSA)***. Students in these positions are required to pay dues for membership in GEO. GSRAs are not covered under the union agreement and are not required to pay union dues. For more information on GSRA, GSSA, and GSI terms, please refer to the Academic Human Resources website. Student must submit an Employment Application For Graduate Student Instructors, and Graduate Student Staff Assistantships (paper copy) and a Bid Form (paper copy) unless the candidate has a financial aid package that includes an assistantship. Guidelines*Graduate Student Research Assistants (GSRA) are students who are asked to work on one of the research projects in a variety of capacities—observation, interviewing, data collection, literature review, writing, etc. These assistantships pay tuition, fees, benefits, and provide a stipend depending upon how much time is required for the activity. It is also possible to augment a regular research assistantship with hourly work on a research project. ** Students who receive Graduate Student Instructorships (GSI) are asked to *** Graduate Student Staff Assistants (GSSA) are graduate students whose employment fulfills a degree requirement or is otherwise considered academically relevant by the department or degree program in which the degree is being pursued. GSSAs perform administrative, counseling or educational duties other than those of a graduate student instructor. Generally there are less than 50 such appointments at any given time. |
