Travel Funding for Presentations/Conferences

by Stein Brunvand ( sbrunvan@umich.edu ), Graduate Student Research Assistant-Center for Highly Interactive Computing in Education (hi-ce) - 1/20/2004

"There are a variety of funds available to use towards travel expenses when you are presenting at conferences. Most of these funds are dispersed on a first come first serve basis, so you will want to submit the necessary paperwork as soon as you know that you will be presenting. The first source of funding is the Rackham Graduate School. They award travel funds once per school year and when the money is gone they stop taking requests. The School of Education also gives out travel funds and you can get the forms you need by visiting the Dean's office on the first floor of the SOE. Like Rackham, these funds can only be requested once per school year and they are limited, so put in your request early. The final source of funding would be the individual research group or grant under which you are working. This may vary from project to project so you will need to talk with your advisor. Usually, if you are presenting something based on work done with a research group there should be at least some money available to support your travel."

"I got money from the School of Education for a conference in the fall and tried to apply for the Rackham money for AERA (American Educational Research Association), but the money had already run out. This year I'm going to do the opposite and apply for the Rackham money first because I don't think the School of Education money ran out last year."
