Elementary Education: Current Ranking 8
The UM School of Education has a long history of excellence in the area of elementary education. We offer several distinctive degree programs for individuals interested in elementary education.
For persons seeking initial preparation to teach elementary school, we offer two options: an undergraduate programleading to a Bachelors degree and certification and a post-graduate program leading to a Master of Arts degree with certification (MAC). In both programs, students work with excellent university faculty, talented graduate students, and superb cooperating teachers. Both programs emphasize extensive field experience in elementary school settings in southeast Michigan. The programs feature strong preparation in subject matter knowledge, a commitment to social justice and equity, and careful development of the pedagogical skills and strategies needed to become a proficient elementary school teacher in a range of settings. The MAC option, which requires an applicant to hold a BA or BS in a relevant teaching field, may be especially attractive to individuals who are considering shifting to a teaching career from another field of employment.
For individuals who wish to pursue doctoral work focused on the study of teaching, teacher learning, or teacher preparation and professional development, we offer a doctoral specialization in the area of Teaching and Teacher Education. This program examines the practice of teaching, and the resources needed to teach well, the knowledge and skill required to help teachers develop, and programmatic alternatives to the education of teachers. Graduates of this program are prepared to engage in both research and practice in a variety of university and non-university settings.
