- November 27: Each Tuesday, community members from SoE can join colleagues at Yost Arena's noontime public skating http:// www.umich.edu/~yostice/public_skate.htm. All are welcome regardless of skill, grace, or the lack thereof. The cost is $2.00 for admission and $1.00 for skate rentals.

- November 29: Open CourseWare (OCW) Fall Speaker Series: Shigeru Miyagawa - Professor of Linguistics, MIT, 4:00 pm, 110 Ford Classroom, Weill Hall, Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. Professor Miyagawa will speak about her experiences as one of the original committee members that proposed Open CourseWare to the MIT administration in 1999.

- November 29: "Assessment and Accountability: Reasonable Approaches for Higher Education" is the topic of a webcast hosted by the Society for College and University Planning, an SOE affiliate; the New York Times Knowledge Network, and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) from 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm EST. The report of the Secretary of Education's Commission on the Future of Higher Education, and potentially radical changes in accreditation in its wake, bring unprecedented national attention to assessing student learning. But how to proceed "reasonably" in this direction, without homogenizing diverse institutions or "teaching to tests" remain much debated questions for colleges and universities. Are there better ways to assess institutional quality to assure policymakers, students, and their parents that they are getting their money's worth? And how do we bring faculty and academic leaders into this conversation to ensure that better teaching and learning is the objective, not just more assessment? Join a dialogue among national thought leaders on the topic to explore these and other questions.
