- October 30: Each Tuesday, community members from SoE can join colleagues at Yost Arena's noontime public skating http://www.umich.edu/~yostice/public_skate.htm. All are welcome regardless of skill, grace, or the lack thereof. The cost is $2.00 for admission and $1.00 for skate rentals.

- November 1: Deadline to submit online request to achieve doctoral candidacy for Winter Term (http://sitemaker.soe.umich.edu/education.candidacy/home). The online request process is NEW! If you submitted an email requesting advancement in Winter Term 2008, it is not necessary to submit another request online. This document describes the process for ES and CSHPE students to follow and the candidacy deadline dates. Web Page: http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/faculty_bios/view/Mitchell_Stevens. - November 9: 17th Annual University of Michigan Senate's Davis, Markert, Nickeson Lecture on Academic and Intellectual Freedom: Nadine Strossen, President, American Civil Liberties Union and Professor of Law, New York Law School on "Defending Freedom: Even for the Thoughts We Hate," 4:00 pm, Honigman Auditorium, 100 Hutchins Hall, Law School, University of Michigan. Nadine Strossen, Professor of Law at New York Law School has written, lectured and practiced extensively in the areas of constitutional law, civil liberties and international human rights. In 1991, she was elected President of the American Civil Liberties Union, the first woman to head the nation's largest and oldest civil liberties organization. (Since the ACLU Presidency is non-paid, Strossen continues in her faculty position as well.) The National Law Journal has named Strossen one of America's "100 Most Influential Lawyers." Strossen makes approximately 200 public presentations per year, before diverse audiences, and she also comments frequently on legal issues in the national media. Professor Miyagawa will speak about her experiences as one of the original committee members that proposed Open CourseWare to the MIT administration in 1999.
