- October 5: Michigan Mathematics Education Leadership Conference, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm, School of Education Building. Theme: "Meeting Higher Expectations in Mathematics Education: Capitalizing on University-School Partnerships as Resources." Arthur F. Coxford Memorial Lecture will be given by Hyman Bass, Roger Lyndon Collegiate Professor of Mathematics and Mathematics Education. To register, go to http://www.mictm.org. C. LOOKING AHEAD
- October 8: Introducing Education, Reflection, and Social Justice, a new group of students, faculty, staff, and other professionals who seek to deepen discussion at the School of Education about the intersection of social justice, education, religious faith, and spirituality as a means to better enhance the improvement of teaching and learning in education settings. The group meets on a monthly basis to create a community for dialogue and a free exchange of ideas. People of all backgrounds who also care about these issues are welcome. Our first event, Reflecting on Our Practice, features Ed St. John, Algo D. Henderson Collegiate Professor of Education on new understandings that emerged while writing Action, Reflection, and Social Justice: Integrating Moral Reasoning into Professional Development (Hampton Press, in press), 4:00 pm, Brownlee (Room 2327). The second meeting in November will focus on resilience.

- October 12: Open discussion of Inside Teaching with the author, Prof. Mary Kennedy (MSU). This is an opportunity for faculty and students to talk informally with Mary Kennedy about the ideas on teaching and educational reform in her well-regarded book. Participants should have read the book in advance. Mary may begin with a very brief highlighting of themes, but we will quickly shift into a general discussion of issues, 11:00 am -12:00 noon, Whitney Auditorium (Room 1309).

- October 15: The Society for College and University Planning (SCUP), an SOE affiliate, is teaming with The New York Times on webcasts of interest to higher education. This first webcast on Monday, October 15, from 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm EST will focus on societal and technological changes that will impact teaching methods and the use of technology in the classroom. -October 15: Knight Commission Faculty Summit on Intercollegiate Athletics in Washington, DC. The general sessions from 8:30 am -10:30 am-which includes School of Education Associate Professor Jan Lawrence, Director for the Faculty Perceptions of Intercollegiate Athletics Survey, reporting on survey results from 8:30 am - 9:15 am--and from 1:00 pm -2:30 pm will be accessible via live webcast on www.knightcommission.org.
