A. DEAN'S UPDATES

1. I am delighted to announce that Michael Dubin will be joining the School of Education as Director of Development and Alumni Relations, effective January 29. Effective right after the break, however, Mike will be spending the equivalent of a day a week with us to begin to get connected to the School and to begin working with us. A member of the development staff with the College of Engineering here at the University of Michigan for almost five years, Mike has most recently been their major gifts officer and has had strong success closing major and planned gifts for a wide variety of initiatives. Mike brings substantial expertise and experience with fundraising and the UM operations that will add to our team here at the SOE. Prior to that, Mike spent nine years in industry managing a multi-million dollar business in addition to co-founding a new business. These experiences taught him about marketing, communications, sales, and financial management. We had several excellent finalists in this search, and I am delighted that Mike has accepted our offer. I look forward to the coming year, and to involving more of you in the development work as our efforts in this area expand.

2. Remember that information about proposal 2 is posted at http://www.vpcomm.umich.edu/diversityresources/prop2faq.html. This will be updated as new information is available.
I have also been asked to serve as a member of the Diversity Blueprints Task Force, chaired by Teresa Sullivan and Lester Monts, along with Percy Bates, Ed St. John, and Phillip Bowman of our faculty. The first meeting is this Tuesday, December 19. The task force is being charged to explore existing methods, both on campus and at other institutions that could be used to create a diverse community. After gathering information from a variety of sources, including public forums, and taking into account the distinctive cultures of U-M schools and colleges, the task force will recommend ways to recruit, retain, and support a diverse student body, faculty, and staff. We will keep you informed about the work of this group, which will be working on a fast timeline to deliver a report to President Coleman by February 15 with recommendations to begin being implemented by March 19.

3. I hope you are able to take some time for yourselves over the break. Thank you for all your work and dedication to our common endeavors.
