1. WORK OF ED STUDIES STUDENT FOCUS OF NYT ARTICLE
Laura Haniford, an Educational Studies doctoral student, gave a presentation at the American Educational Research Association conference in Chicago which was the focus of an article in the April 30 issue of "The New York Times." Haniford's presentation focused on the coverage of the educational racial achievement gap by the "Ann Arbor News" beginning in 1985.
2. MIREL RECEIVES SECOND FULBRIGHT AWARD
Prof. Jeffrey Mirel has received a Fulbright Senior Specialist Award to be a visiting professor at the National University of Ostroh Academy in Ostroh, Ukraine. Prof. Mirel will be teaching an undergraduate survey course in American history. This is Prof. Mirel's second Fulbright Award to teach in the Ukraine.
3. NEW AWARD
==Eric Dey and Heidi Grunwald have received a new award from the Association for Institutional Research/NSF for a project titled "Factors Affecting Faculty Use of Instructional Technology in Traditional Classrooms: A Hierarchical Linear Model Approach" in the amount of $15,000.

"Learning from Mathematics Teaching Around the World: Lessons from the Latest TIMSS Video Study"

9. QUICK REFERENCE FOR SENSITIVE DATA
The "Quick Reference for Handling Student, Employee, and Patient Information" is a ready-reference to information and resources on appropriate handling of private/confidential and sensitive data located in the University's administrative data systems. In addition to identifying data elements considered to be of a sensitive nature, it outlines responsibilities when accessing and distributing sensitive data as well as providing available resources to assist in difficult situations. 10. DIGITAL TOOL KIT REGISTRATION UNDER WAY
Members of the University community may now register for the popular Digital Tool Kit professional development courses offered by the School of Information. This year, 13 noncredit courses are offered from June 30 to August 8. New this year are five "DTK in a Flash!" courses that cover single topics in one day. You can learn new skills or enhance those they already have. DTK courses cover such topics as database design; Web design and usability; HTML, Perl, and XML programming; Photoshop and Dreamweaver; and others. Expert practitioners from the field teach the courses, and continuing education units are available. Complete registration details and a course list are online at http://si.umich.edu/dtk.
