==January 21, 2003 Meeting
*Announcements/Updates
Valerie Lee and David Burkam have submitted a proposal to host the "American Journal of Education" at SOE.
Dean Wixson will keep the Committee apprised of the search progress for the Spencer Endowed Chair in Education and Business, which has identified several candidates.
Joe Krajcik reported that the search committee feels the pool of about applicants for the science education position is strong.
*Continuation of Discussions on Planning and Budget
Dean Wixson referred to President Coleman's recent email anticipating additional cuts in our state appropriations, and noted that deans were recently asked by the Provost to reduce their budgets by more than the 2% originally directed. Although this is discouraging, Dean Wixson noted that all our recent budget discussions should serve us well in this regard. She and Assoc. Dean Dey will be discussing the 2004 budget with the Committee prior to the budget conference scheduled for March 10, 2003.
Assoc. Dean Dey explained the activity-based model being used in developing the budget. Working closely with individual units, their real operational costs and effective methods to cover them are determined. It was suggested that SOE needs to re-examine teaching capacity and bolster this part of the enterprise, as it is a primary source of revenue. Other options to consider might be modified course loads and a teaching incentive fund. Committee members offered examples of practices by other units and Schools that we might want to consider including an extensive study of teaching capacity and policies that require faculty members to teach at least one service course per year.
