The United States Fair Use for Education doctrine says that making and distributing multiple copies of the same materials without getting the written permission of the legal copyright holder circumvents the spirit of the copyright law. Therefore such copying/distributing is illegal and expensive. The SOE community is urged to remember these legal issues when considering copying materials, or having them copied, for distribution to students.

6. QUICK REFERENCE FOR SENSITIVE DATA

The "Quick Reference for Handling Student, Employee, and Patient Information" is a ready-reference to information and resources on appropriate handling of private/confidential and sensitive data located in the University's administrative data systems. In addition to identifying data elements considered to be of a sensitive nature, it outlines responsibilities when accessing and distributing sensitive data as well as providing available resources to assist in difficult situations. The guide is available on the web at http://www.mais.umich.edu/access/download/ja_access_compliance_101802.doc

7. TECH SERVICES PROJECT

In the next couple of weeks, Tech Services staff will be visiting every office in the building to update the computer and operating system database. This information is necessary to be as accurate as possible in identifying next year's budgetary needs. This should only take a few minutes and Tech staff will do this as unobtrusively as possible.
