CALENDAR

Annual School of Education/School of Social Work MLK Day for Children

Date: Monday, January 20

Time: 8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Location: Modern Languages Building, first floor

Already a classic component of MLK Day activities for 13 years, the all day events draw approximately 500 children and youth. In addition to meals and snacks served for children and youth, we will provide storytellers, artists, and games and activities highlighting the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

1. CSHPE STUDENT CHAIRS ACPA COMMITTEE

CSHPE student Mark Garrett was recently elected chair of the American College Personnel Association's Standing Committee for Graduate Students and New Professionals. Mark will also serve on the ACPA Executive Council.

2. NIDIFFER TO LECTURE ON BOOK

Professor Jana Nidiffer will lecture on her book, "Pioneering Deans of Women: More than Wise and Pious Matrons" on Tuesday, January 21, at 3:00 p.m. in the Detroit Observatory Library, corner of Ann and Observatory. Prof. Nidiffer will discuss how the first professional women administrators helped 19th century women students cope with the challenges they faced. 3. ED STUDIES PART OF CARNEGIE FOUNDATION INITIATIVE

The Educational Studies Program has been selected to participate in The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching's Initiative on the Doctorate. As one of 32 partner departments ES "will analyze all aspects of their doctoral programs and link specific activities to desired outcomes. Departments will begin this analysis by clarifying their goals for doctoral education in their respective disciplines, and will commit to creating 'design experiments' in doctoral education to better meet their identified goals." Other U-M departments participating are chemistry, English and mathematics.

4. NEW AWARD

==Karen Wixson, John Burkardt, and Stephen Raudenbush have received a grant from the Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan/WK Kellogg Foundation for their project entitled, "Michigan Colloquium and Social Justice in Education" in the amount of $28,083.

5. DEGREE CONFERRAL DEADLINES

To apply for the conferral of a Master's or Ed.S. degree in April or August 2003, you must complete and submit a Degree Diploma Application. For additional information about the degree conferral process and the deadline dates for submitting the Degree/Diploma Application, please refer to Degree/Diploma Application Deadlines and Procedures information at http://www.soe.umich.edu/programs/deadlines/degdipldl.html.

6. U-M POLICES ON EMAIL USAGE

Resources such as email and Internet connectivity are provided primarily for U-M business use. Use of these resources for personal advertisements is not permitted. Inappropriate use of email is reported to a central IT Ombudsman for tracking purposes. Failure to follow U-M IT policy can result in removal of access to the University system. 7. RACKHAM MOVE

All Graduate School Student Services and Dean's Administrative offices are scheduled to return to the Rackham Building during the week of January 20, 2003. Services for graduate students and faculty will be maintained throughout the transition with minimal disruption. All current Rackham Graduate School telephone numbers will remain the same. Periodic updates on construction activities and the scheduled re-opening of meeting and conference rooms in the Rackham Building will be provided on the web at http://www.rackham.umich.edu as work progresses.

8. LOST & FOUND

The School of Education Lost & Found is located in the Facilities Office, 1002 SEB. If you find an item in the building, please drop it off or send it to this office. Include a note saying where it was found and when. Likewise, if you are missing something, check here first. Thank you.

==Need to Update Your Life Insurance Beneficiaries?

It is important to keep your named beneficiaries up-to-date on your life insurance coverage. The Change/Update of Beneficiary for Group Life Insurance is on the Benefits Office Web site at http://www.umich.edu/~benefits/forms/life.htm. Print the form, complete the information, sign the form and fax it to the HRRIS Benefits Transaction Team at 734-763-0363.

==Benefits Change Forms Now Available on the Web

Benefits change forms are available on the Benefits Office Web site at http://www.umich.edu/~benefits. Click on 'Forms', then select 'Benefits Office Change Forms' to find the form you need. Print, complete and sign the forms, then fax them to the HRRIS Benefits Transaction Team at 734-763-0363.

==Planning for Retirement Kit Available

If you plan to retire within 10 years, you might want to take a look at the Planning for Retirement Kit. To obtain a kit, email your request to benefits.books@umich.edu. Include the name and address where you wish the kit mailed. Allow 10 business days for mailing.

10. INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL WARNING

The U-M International Travel Oversight Committee has issued a memo regarding a US State Department Warning for persons traveling to Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza.
