1. PROFESSOR BASS ATTENDS WHITE HOUSE CEREMONY
Professor Hyman Bass attended the signing into law of the National Science Foundation Authorization Act of 2002 on December 19 through an invitation extended by President Bush and the Office of Science and Technology Policy, Executive Office of the President. The bill signing took place in the Roosevelt Room of the White House.
2. PROFESSOR NETTLES TO CO-CHAIR NATIONAL COMMISSION
Professor Michael Nettles has been appointed to co-chair the National Commission on the Twelfth Grade. The commission will meet for the next 18 months to examine student performance, motivation and effort in the senior year of high school as it pertains to achievement and performance on the National Assessment of Educational Progress.

4. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR MLK CHILDREN'S PROGRAM
Training for MLK Volunteers

You must attend one of the training sessions to volunteer.
The children's day program, co-sponsored by SOE and the School of Social Work, attracts up to 600 children from K-high school for a wonderful program consisting of storytelling, arts and crafts work, skits, dance, etc. Volunteers will help register children at the first floor desks, and help direct the children to and from the various activities. You will also be asked to work with smaller groups of children throughout the day. For more information contact Leslie Doty Hollingsworth at 763-6572, or lholling at umich.edu.
5. E-RESOURCES WORKSHOP
**Beyond Basics Library Workshop
Date: Tuesday, January 14
Time: 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Location: New Media Center, 3010 SEB
The Beyond Basics Library Workshop is for graduate students and faculty who are familiar with the electronic resources available through the University Library but would like to increase their skills. More sophisticated techniques and complex search strategies will be explored. This is a hands-on workshop. Bring your questions.

6. CLASS OF 1923 TEACHING AWARD NOMINATIONS
This award is presented to an individual at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor who devote some of their time to teaching or mentoring of undergraduates and carries with it a stipend of $1,500. Selection criteria include: 1) evidence of special interest in improving personal teaching effectiveness; 2) general reputation among colleagues for interest and excellence in undergraduate teaching.
Nomination letters are due in the Dean's Office by Tuesday, January 21, 2003 Individuals selected as finalists for this years award will be notified by February 1, and their teaching portfolios will be due March 3, 2003. 7. RESEARCH PARTNERSHIP GRANTS/AWARDS PROGRAM
The Dean of Rackham Graduate Studies and the Vice President for Research have announced the 18th round of the Research Partnership Program, initiated with the aim of improving the scholarly and research environment for both faculty and graduate students. This year, the following opportunities will be available:
* The Spring/Summer Research Grants Program will award a minimum of 30 grants to faculty to enable them to hire doctoral students to assist with their research and scholarly projects while providing both financial support and tasks of intellectual benefit to participating doctoral students.
* The Distinguished Faculty and Graduate Student Seminars Program will provide a maximum of 10 awards to groups of faculty, students or graduate programs proposing innovative seminars and colloquia to foster collaboration and stimulate new research.
