1. SILVER DELIVERS KEYNOTE LECTURE
Prof. Edward Silver delivered the keynote lecture at the inaugural annual conference of the Irish Primary Teacher's Mathematics Association held earlier this month. His lecture was titled, " Moving forward with Mathematics through Open Problems." Prof. Silver also gave a talk titled "Using Cases to help Teachers of Mathematics become More Reflective and More Effective," in Dublin to a gathering of Irish mathematics teacher educators.
2. NEW AWARD
==Joanne Carlisle has been awarded $1,016,048 from the Michigan Department of Education/USDOE for a project entitled "Evaluation and Technical Assistance for Michigan's 'Reading First' Program."
3. SOE STUDENTS RECEIVE RACKHAM AWARD
The Rackham Graduate School has named Donald DiPaolo and Suzanne Spring Outstanding Graduate Student Instructors for 2002. They are among only 20 GSI who were so honored. DiPaolo is a doctoral student in the Educational Studies Program and Spring is in the Joint Program in English and Education.
4. DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF WORLD BANK'S EDUCATION DEPARTMENT TO SPEAK
Dr. Jamil Salmi, deputy director of the World Bank's Education Department will speak on "Constructing Knowledge Societies: New Challenges to Higher Education," Tuesday, October 29, 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. in the Henderson Room, Michigan League. Dr. Salmi's talk, co-sponsored by SOE, will address the role of universities in constructing knowledge societies when confronted with critical changes such as globalization and the information and communications technologies revolution. 5. JACK KENT COOKE SCHOLARSHIPS
Jack Kent Cooke Scholarships provide funding for tuition, room and board, required fees and books for the remainder of the scholar's undergraduate degree, but do not exceed $30,000 annually. To be eligible, a student must be a junior in the fall term 2003 and must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applications to the U-M selection committee and all supporting materials will be due on January 3, 2002. Additional information on U-M requirements is available on the web at http://www.lsa.umich.edu/honors or contact the Honors Scholarship Coordinator, Dr. Elleanor Crown (ecrown at umich.edu). 7. YMCA POSITIONS AVAILABLE
The Ann Arbor YMCA is looking for enthusiastic people who are interested in working with children and sports to work as a gym teacher, Mondays, 1:30-4:00 p.m. and as a floor hockey instructor, Fridays, 4:30-5:30 p.m. If you are interested please email Joe Lillie at youthsports at annarborymca.org or 213-8592 ext. 425.
