1. COHEN RECOGNIZED WITH NAMED PROFESSORSHIP
SOE Professor David Cohen has been named the first Walter H. Annenberg Professor of Education Policy at the Ford School of Public Policy. Prof. Cohen, who is also the SOE John H. Dewey Professor of Education, will give the Inaugural Lecture of the Public Policy Professorship Tuesday, October 22 at 4:00 p.m. in the Anderson Room, Michigan Union. A reception will follow the lecture entitled "Resources, Instruction and Research."
2. NEW GRANTS/AWARDS
==Anne Gere, has received an award from the USDOE for project entitled, "Teacher Quality: Recruitment and Retention" in the amount of $1,140,375.
==Heather Hill has received a $249,751 award from NSF/MSP for a project entitled, "Design, Validation and Dissemination of Measures of Content Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics."
==Chris Quintana, Elliot Soloway and Joe Krajcik, have been awarded $473,798 from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled "A Digital IdeaKeeper for K-12: National Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology Education (MSETE) Digital Library (NSDL) Scaffolded Portal Services for Information Analysis and Synthesis."
3. NSF PERSPECTIVE ON DOCTORAL STUDENT SUPPORT
Judith A. Ramaley, Assistant Director, Directorate for Education and Human Resources, National Science Foundation (NSF), will speaking on how doctoral students have been supported in the past and how they should be supported in the future, from the NSF perspective. The talk on Wednesday, October 30, at 8:30 a.m. in the Hussey Room, Michigan League is open to the public, especially members of the SOE community. There will be time for questions and answers. Dr. Ramaley's talk is part of the "Coming Up a Winner: Students and the Ph.D. Gamble" conference, hosted by Michael Nettles and Catherine Millett on October 29 - 30. The program's focus is on doctoral students in the United States.
4. SOE COMMUNITY INVITED TO PRE-CONFERENCE BROWN BAG
On Tuesday, October 29, six participants in the "Coming Up a Winner: Students and the Ph.D. Gamble" will be giving short talks in the School of Education during a brown bag event at noon (location to be determined). Speakers include Susan Dauber, Spencer Foundation; Charlotte V. Kuh, Executive Director, Office of Scientific and Engineering Personnel, National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences; Thomas Rochon, GRE Executive Director, Educational Testing Services; Larry E. Suter, Statistician Program Director, Division of Research, Evaluation and Communication, National Science Foundation; and Elizabeth VanderPutten, Program Director, Division of Research, Evaluation and Communication, National Science Foundation. 5. WELCOME NEW EMPLOYEE
Adrienne Lomangino began Monday, October 7 as a Research Associate working with Annemarie Palincsar. She can be reached at 936-9318, adjgel at umich.edu, or in 4002 SEB.
6. LOOKING FOR BOOKS
America Reads is holding a book drive to collect new children's books (K-3) so each child in the program receives a new book. A collection box will be located in the first floor SOE mailroom all of next week.
7. SABBATICAL LEAVE REQUESTS
Sabbatical Leave Requests are due in the Dean's Office December 2, 2002 for review at the December Executive Committee Meeting. Copies of the required Form J are available from Becki Spangler or online at http://www.umich.edu/~hraa/hrris/forms.html.

10. BUILDING ENTRANCE CLOSED
Monday through Wednesday, October 14 - 16, the northeast SEB entrance, between the Advisors Annex (Rm. 1001) and the Facilities Office (Rm. 1002) will be closed due to construction. Access will be available from the south entrance (near CPEP) and the power-activated handicapped entrance between SEB and SSW will also remain open.
