Summary of Requirements for Teacher Certification

The following requirements must all be satisfied in order for the School of Education to recommend a teacher candidate for a Michigan provisional teaching certificate:

      1. Completion of a minimum 130 credit hours of coursework.
      2. Completion of all required education courses in residence on the Ann Arbor campus unless otherwise approved by the Teacher Education Petition Committee or the Director of Teacher Education.
      3. Completion of teaching major and minor requirements as described by program.
      4. Completion of all education courses with grades of "C" or higher. Completion of all practicum and student teaching courses with a grade of "S" or Satisfactory.
      5. A grade point average of 2.0 overall and in the teaching major(s) and minor(s) based on courses taken at the University of Michigan.
      6. Completion of a minimum 45 credits of general studies courses for elementary certification and 24 credits for secondary certification as described by program.
      7. Completion, if applicable, of all degree requirements.
      8. Compliance with 'Licensure in Michigan' requirements (See Licensure in Michigan .).

Upon successful completion of all program and degree requirements, teacher candidates will be recommended to the State of Michigan for a provisional teaching certificate. This certificate is valid for a period of six years.
