Staff Development & Performance Management: History
History

In 2006, a subcommittee of the Dean’s Administrative and Staff Leadership Group was formed to consider the professional development needs of staff. This subcommittee elected to call itself the Staff Development and Performance Management Team.
Recognizing its importance, Dean Deborah Ball endorsed the Staff Development Team’s work, providing funds through which the Team supports School of Education staff by sponsoring professional development opportunities, promoting career advancement, and recognizing the need and desire for personal effectiveness.
Staff Review & Recognition
In addition to staff development, the subcommittee’s other stated purpose was to recommend improvements to the staff performance review process. Toward this end, the Team conducted a series of focus groups in summer 2006. Staff were asked to share their views and opinions about the existing review process and offer recommendations. Some suggestions were:
- Provide staff with opportunities for advancement through professional development and information on SoE job postings as positions become available.
- Create a system with clear guidelines on evaluation criteria to eliminate surprises at evaluation time.
- Clear communication between supervisor/employee.
- Provide supervisor training opportunities.
In 2007 the Staff Development and Performance Management Team self-selected to add staff recognition to its mandate. Subsequent to this expansion of mission, the committee looks for ways to recognize and show our appreciation for the SoE staff.
