The cohort approach to improving achievement of initially low-performing students in under-resourced communities contrasts with the current practice of remediation. It aims to accelerate them using materials that engage them in meaningful mathematics and prepare them for college-level mathematics, and to support their development through additional interventions that change their immediate peer and classroom culture, even though the culture of their larger context may be negative.
