Creating a Health Literacy and Health Career Curriculum for Low Income and Immigrant Youth

The goal of this project is to create a health information and health career pipeline curriculum for low income and immigrant youth by integrating National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) health information tools into existing youth programming at Neighborhood House. This NLM derived curriculum will be integrated into the existing programs within Neighborhood. Integrating a curriculum funded by NLM extends current program offerings to: (1) introduce careers in the health sciences and (2) expand underserved minority students’ opportunities to learn critical health information literacy skills in order to create products related to health and health literacy that inform their own community. Students will create multimedia artifacts (e.g., movies, posters, public service announcements, and interactive books) about critical health issues to share with their community. They will also have an opportunity to interact with health professionals and learn more about health care careers.
