Mary Wilhelm, School of Education

Field of Study: Undergraduate Certification Program- Secondary English

Year in Program: c/o 2014

Age: 22

Geographic Region: Atlanta, GA > Tampa, FL > Greenville, MI

Prior to UM: I came to the University of Michigan straight out of High School.

Why your program? I love the English language and I believe that it is a tool that every student can and should be able to use effectively. I knew I wanted to go into teaching to care for students and make a difference in their lives like my teachers did for me.

The best part of SOE so far: The best part of the SOE was picking the brains of your teachers as you learn to become a teacher. Asking questions like, "Did you plan that?" or "How did you decide to..." can help you see possible courses of action in specific situations. All the teachers in the SOE are great at modeling excellent teacher moves and are more than happy to talk about why they do what they do, and how you can do it too.

After graduation: I am now living in Los Angeles, California, teaching 7th grade English at a Charter Middle School under a 2 year contract with Teach for America. I envision many happy years in the classroom to come.

Teach me something! My best piece of advice to students: always ask. Someone can always help you no matter how big or small your question or concern is. And if they can't, they'll find someone who can.
