Student Ambassador Educational Studies, PhD Teaching and Teacher Education

Peter Cipparone, School of Education

Field of Study: Educational Studies, PhD, Teaching and Teacher Education

Year in Program: 3rd year

Prior to UM: The year after college, I taught in Ciempozuelous, Spain on a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship. After attending a teacher training program at the Shady Hill School in Cambridge, MA, I taught 4th grade for four years in the NYC Public Schools, at PS 161 in Manhattan and PS 29 in Brooklyn. I also helped start the NYC Math Lab - - which was inspired by the Elementary Math Lab here at Michigan.

Research Interests: I study whole class discussion in elementary school classrooms in multiple subject areas. I believe discussions with young children simultaneously serve to empower students, support subject matter learning, and build a democracy where people can listen to one another's ideas and reconcile their differences.

After graduation: I plan to become a principal. I think we need more school leaders with a strong background in research on teaching and learning, which is why I'm here in the PhD program.
