Prior to UM: I grew up in Farmington Hills, Michigan and attended the University of Michigan for undergrad.

Why your program? I have always wanted to be a teacher, so it seemed natural for me to gravitate toward the School of Education. In addition to pursuing my passion, I loved the small school feeling inside the large university. I was most attracted to the cohort component of the program, which is that education students have the opportunity to travel through the program with a small group of peers. This set-up enables close relationships with colleagues, and is one of the unique features that make the SOE so incredible.

The best part of SOE so far: One morning, we had class at an Ann Arbor elementary school. While I was waiting to turn left, I noticed the car in front of me, which belonged to a peer, was having trouble. An instant later, I watched as a member of my cohort ran across the street, seemingly out of nowhere, and pushed this car through the intersection. As I later reflected on this incident, I felt so lucky to be a part of a unit where people will literally push each other's cars through intersections if needed. I have UM's SOE to thank for creating this connection, and I love being a part of a program where receiving support is so perpetual.

After graduation: After graduation, I moved to New York City. I am teaching 1st grade right outside of the city. I plan to begin Masters work in Literacy in the fall.

Teach me something!  I would advise a student entering the SOE to get to know your professors. Here at the SOE, we are so lucky to have such extraordinary staff and faculty, as well as an impressively low faculty to student ratio. I would encourage prospective students to utilize these people because they have so much to offer!
