Esmeralda Ana Hernandez
Doctoral student in Public Policy in Postsecondary Education
Field of Study: Higher Education—Public Policy and Postsecondary Education
Year in Program: 3rd year

Undergraduate: University of California, Irvine
Prior to UM: I was an undergraduate student at the University of California Irvine, and Research Programs manager at the Social Sciences Academic Research Center.
Why your program? I am interested in policies that produce or perpetuate inequality in higher education and those that produce a more equitable system. I am also interested in how organizations come to make these policy decisions.
The best part of SOE so far: Having access to the best education scholars. Our faculty are a great resource to you as you develop your own professional and scholarly identities. In addition, great scholars from all over the nation come speak about their work. Don't forget all the free food at these events!
After graduation: I don't know what I want to do as of yet. This feeling is scary, but on the bright side, there are many options available for a Ph.D. student when they graduate.
Teach me something! Ann Arbor is absolutely magical in the summer. So take advantage! Go biking, kayaking, and camping. Make sure you catch the Ann Arbor Summer Festival and the Art Fair. Although the winter is long and very cold, I would suggest still finding things to do for fun. Go to the movies or buy a sled and go sledding at a golf course. These are among my favorite things to do in Ann Arbor.
