Year in Program: 3rd year

Geographic Region: Miami, FL

Undergraduate: University of Miami

Prior to UM: Prior to coming to the University of Michigan I was an Associate Site Director for a non-profit educational organization that sought to challenge educational inequity through out-of -school educational programming. My professional experiences motivated me to increase my academic research training to address complex community issues, leading me to pursue my Master’s degree through the University of Miami’s Community and Social Change Program. While there I worked as the research assistant for three Haiti-based community mental health training programs.

Why your program? The Combined Program in Education and Psychology is perfect for my research and training interests. After graduating with a master’s in community and social change, I was interested in finding a program that would support my desire to develop psychological and educational research in applied/community settings. The program’s interdisciplinary focus affords me the opportunity to study culturally appropriate research methodologies in traditional and non-traditional educational and community contexts.

The best part of SOE so far: I enjoy being part of a stimulating community of innovative thinkers. It is hard to beat the supportive community at CPEP. Thanks to the high level of mentorship, training, and support from faculty and colleagues alike, I am confident in my ability to produce and apply high quality critical scholarship that can help inform transformational change.

After graduation: I plan to pursue a career in academia.
