Kristen Glasener

Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education, Public Policy in Postsecondary Education

Field of Study: Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education, PhD - Public Policy

Year in Program: 1

Geographic Region: Dayton, Ohio

Undergraduate: Ohio State University (BA), Boston University (MSW)

Prior to UM: After earning my MSW from Boston University, I served as an AmeriCorps*VISTA in Columbus, Ohio, working for an early college outreach program in collaboration with the Columbus Public School District and Ohio State University. After my year of service, I landed at Oberlin College, where I worked for a college access program and in undergraduate admissions for the past three years.

The best part of SOE so far: There is always something going on at the SOE! Coffee hours with the Dean, Race and Social Justice Symposiums, professional development workshops, Grad student back-offs - I could literally attend an event every day of the week if time permitted (with free food, I might add). In addition to the incredible resources and learning opportunities available at the School of Ed, I feel like I am a part of a very supportive and collaborative community. The faculty are extremely accessible and willing to help, the staff are welcoming and knowledgeable, and my classmates are thoughtful, supportive, and FUN!

After graduation: Yikes! There are so many options. I'm still trying to iron out my plans, but I think I may want to go into policy work in higher ed or pursue a faculty position.

Teach me something! It's my first year in Ann Arbor - but so far, I can tell you the parks are awesome! Take a break from studying and head to Nichols Arboretum or Gallup Park to soak up some fresh air and beautiful scenery. If you love the outdoors, AA is a great place to bike, hike, or even kayak!
