Vanessa Fellers, School of Education

Field of Study: MA Higher Education Administration - Student Access and Success

Year in Program: c/o 2014

Age: 27

Geographic Region: Houston, TX

Undergraduate: Texas A&M University-College Station

Prior to UM: Prior to coming to the University of Michigan, I worked in higher education at Rice University for almost five years in various different roles focusing on everything from administrative tasks to department budgeting to student club relations to academic affairs. I specifically worked in the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business with the part-time MBA students. Prior even to Rice University, I toyed with the idea of becoming a K-12 teacher but switched to post-secondary education just before completing my certification.

Why your program? I chose Student Access and Success as my concentration because I knew very early on that I wanted to focus and delve deeply into student access, learning, and achievement in higher education institutions. Some of the courses within this concentration include everything from student development theories, law, policies, and teaching/learning environments. SAS also has an internship requirement where you work hands-on with student access and/or success issues at the University of Michigan.

The best part of SOE so far: The best part of my time at the School of Education is the people. When I committed to coming to the University of Michigan, I anticipated being surrounded by some of the future leaders of higher education (both in administration and research); however, I was surprised at the genuine relationships and connections that have also sprung up during my time here.

After graduation: I plan on continuing my work in student and academic affairs and joining an academic advising team.

Teach me something! Explore! Ann Arbor is one of the "largest" small-towns in the nation and has a wide variety of activities and attractions. While it may be convenient to stay near SOE or Central Campus, don't be afraid to walk around and explore!
