Year in Program: graduated 2014

Where do you HAIL from? Marquette, MI

Prior degree(s): University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

Before coming to UM: After earning a BA in English from the University of Michigan and a MA in West European Studies from Indiana University, I taught English Composition and English as a Second Language at Northern Michigan University for 3 semesters. I also traveled to Krakow, Poland from January to July, 2013 to study Polish language and culture and do some training as an ESL instructor prior to returning to U of M for my second MA.

Why your program? One of the primary reasons I decided to come to CSHPE was the opportunity to concentrate in philanthropy from a higher education perspective, as I knew this was the area of higher ed I wanted to work in. I thoroughly enjoyed getting both some practical experience and academic and historical background on the role of advancement and philanthropy within colleges and universities.

The best part of SOE so far: I really appreciated the freedom of being able to tailor the program to my specific needs and goals after graduation. Additionally, my fellow cohort members brought such varied life experiences and perspectives to the program, that helped enrich our conversations both inside and outside of the classroom.

After graduation: I graduated from the MA program in two semesters, and took a job shortly afterwards at Amherst College in Massachusetts within their Annual Fund. I have since returned to Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan where I now serve as Associate Director of Development & Alumni Relations
at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business.

Teach me something! Ann Arbor is one of the best college towns around. Be sure to take advantage of student ticket pricing for concerts at Hill Auditorium, as well as the many world-class speakers and scholars who visit each year. The restaurant scene is also top notch, and if you're a sports fan you could hardly be in a better place. Getting out of your apartment and off campus is essential for maintaining some balance in your life during the program, and luckily there really is something for everyone to enjoy here.
