Master of Arts in Higher Education, '13

Karina Beras, School of Education

Field of Study: MA in Higher Education - Diversity and Social Justice

Year in Program:  graduated 2013

Where do you HAIL from?  New York

Prior degree(s): Cornell University-Hotel and Restaurant Administration

Before coming to U-M:  Working in admissions at the University of Louisville.

Why this program?  I was looking for a place that provided me with the educational and professional opportunities I seek within the realm of higher education, but more importantly a place that felt “right”. I took a look at the course offerings and the diversity of the faculty and their research interests, searched for African American and Latino Studies departments at U-M, and made sure that the city of Ann Arbor would provide the amenities I would need to be happy.

The best part of SOE:  Without a doubt, I attribute the best part of my experience as a graduate student thus far to the challenging and sometimes uncomfortable, yet extremely engaging conversations that happen in my some of my courses. My frame of reference and perspective has expanded by the course readings and the criticism and viewpoints of my colleagues. I can honestly say that I leave each class meeting knowing more, questioning more, and wanting to learn more after nearly every session.

After graduation:  Worked at Swarthmore College in Residence Life and at the Black Cultural Center. Now I'm at Barnard College in Student Life.

Teach me something!  Switch up your internships and learn about a different department/office on campus, attend campus events, explore Ann Arbor/Ypsi/Detroit. If you enjoy soul food, make your way to Cuppy's in Ypsi. Also, Frida Batidos is soooo good!
