Kristin Economo

Master of Arts in Educational Studies: Educational Policy & Leadership and Master of Business Administration (MBA) Dual Degree

Kristin Economo, School of Education

Student status: Third year, dual MBA/MA in Education Leadership & Policy

Geographic region of origin: I lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico prior to graduate school but originally hail from Durham, North Carolina.

Previous education: B.A. in International Studies, University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill

Prior to joining the program: Associate Director for Breakthrough Santa Fe, a college access non-profit in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Why the Educational Studies MA and MBA dual degree? I wanted to strengthen my leadership skills and business acumen while deepening my thinking about how to expand education access in the U.S. By being in both communities, the dual degree has allowed me to learn how to communicate effectively within both the education and business worlds. Michigan is a dynamic place to be a graduate student, with top graduate schools in not only business and education, but also policy, information science, law, etc. U-M's proximity to Detroit has also allowed me to get involved in interesting projects related to urban education.

Highlights of the Michigan experience: My greatest highlight was discovering a passion for helping companies design innovative education and career development programs that benefit both employees and businesses. Additionally, I loved launching the first Education xChange Summit at the business school through the Ross Education + Business Club. The event featured a keynote by the head of Google for Education, demos of education technologies developed at UM, a design thinking challenge, and brought together an amazing group of folks from across the university to discuss the future of education. Perhaps above all, I have enjoyed being immersed in a vibrant community of engaged, welcoming professors and peers at both institutions.
