A story in The Ann Arbor Independent on the MathCounts program quotes Vilma Mesa, who leads the extracurricular program for sixth- to eighth-grade students at Forsythe Middle School in the Ann Arbor Public Schools district. “The program opens the opportunity for students to work on math problems that are different from the school math problems,” said Mesa. “It shows some of the fun side of mathematics.” She mentioned that she and husband Patricio Herbst got involved with the program as part of an effort to help their own children have fun with math. Several SOE doctoral students also helped with the MathCounts program at Forsythe this year, including Minsung Kwon, Jill Mortimer, and Kolby Gadd. Read the story here.
