A team of SOE researchers led by Edward St. John has written a new book, Left Behind: Urban High Schools and the Failure of Market Reform, which has been published by Johns Hopkins University Press. St. John and researchers Victoria J. Milazzo Bigelow (PhD ’13), Kim Callahan Lijana (PhD ’15), and doctoral candidate Johanna C. Masse examined educational reforms in four urban charter schools across the United States and four public high schools in New York City, and found that district schools struggle to comply with standards that leave little room to develop advanced thematic curricula and that charter schools have not succeeded in substantially raising student test scores.
