Washtenaw Technical Middle College, whose principal is SOE lecturer Karl Covert, has been named no. 7 overall in Newsweek magazine’s annual ranking of the best high schools in the U.S. It was also ranked no. 35 in top schools for low-income students. Washtenaw Technical Middle College is a charter school that allows students to earn a high school diploma and an associate’s degree or technical certificate. "I don't think teachers and educators get the respect that they deserve. This [ranking] is an acknowledgement of the hard work they do every day and the investment they make for kids," Covert said in The Detroit News. Covert is a lecturer in SOE’s MA program in Educational Leadership and Policy. See Newsweek’s rankings here.
