On June 16, 2016, the University of Michigan Board of Regents approved the appointment of two new associate deans for the School of Education:

  • Ed Silver will serve as Senior Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, effective July 1, 2016.

Dr. Silver is the William A. Brownell Collegiate Professor of Education in the School of Education and professor of mathematics in LSA. Ed’s scholarly interests include the study of mathematical thinking, especially mathematical problem solving and problem posing; the design and analysis of intellectually engaging and equitable mathematics instruction for students; innovative methods of assessing and reporting mathematics achievement; the practices of mathematics teaching and methods to enhance teachers’ knowledge and effectiveness; and the interface and productive exchange between research and practice in education.

Dr. Saunders is a clinical professor of education in the School of Education. She is a leader in providing professional development for teachers in the areas of trauma and equity. Her scholarship addresses gaps in the preparation of teachers related to issues of equity and social justice and her commitments to transformation, social justice, and advocacy drive her teaching practice. Please join me in congratulating Ed and Shari and thanking them for their willingness to serve in such important leadership roles.
