3/17/2005 - We regretfully announce that Prof. Emeritus Stephen Dunning has passed away. Dunning taught in both junior and senior high schools before joining the faculty of Duke University in 1959. He then taught at Northwestern University for two years before becoming a professor at the University of Michigan in 1964. A past president of the Michigan Council of Teachers of English, Dunning was formerly a chair of the Conference on English Education, a director of the NCTE Commission on Literature, and a member of many NCTE committees. During his presidency he established SLATE (which he calls the Social Action Fund in his presidential address) as a means for the Council to address pressing political and social issues.
