Nell Duke talks early childhood literacy on Education Talk Radio podcast


Professor Nell Duke and Dawn Linden, Executive Director of Elementary Education for Ann Arbor Public Schools, were interviewed for the podcast Education Talk Radio with Larry Jacobs. The podcast centered on the topic of “Pre-K Comprehension Development and Instruction for Education Equity and Learning.”

Jacobs asked about Ann Arbor Public Schools demographics and typical early childhood education. Duke discussed the benefits of strong collaborations, specifically pointing to the Mitchell-Scarlett-Huron Teaching and Learning Collaborative managed by Professor Cathy Reischl and other partnerships launched and developed by Dean Elizabeth Birr Moje.

Duke also discussed cultural contexts around literacy, emergent literacy theory, socio-economic status in relation to opportunities to develop literacy skills, and the importance of preparing teachers to recognize linguistic diversity as an asset.
