Michael Bastedo’s research was cited in a recent Inside Higher Ed article titled “Redoing Application Reading: Admissions officers talk about changing the way applications are read in order to keep up with demographic changes.”

Bastedo examined anchoring bias (relying too heavily on the first piece of information an admissions reader sees when making a decision) and correspondence bias (a tendency to link facts to people’s personalities rather than the context surrounding them).

“When I did my fieldwork I saw people trying to fix these problems without identifying them the way I did,” Bastedo said. “They saw these problems and they were trying to train readers not to do them.”
