Matthew Diemer’s research on confronting inequality featured in Michigan News

Research conducted by SOE faculty member Matthew Diemer and his colleague Luke Rapa was featured in Michigan News. Diemer and Rapa found that educators can help disadvantaged students with their academics and their future adult lives by offering them opportunities for social activism, including civil engagement or volunteering. "We have strong evidence that directly addressing and challenging—instead of avoiding—inequality is good for historically marginalized youth,” notes Diemer.

Diemer and his colleague hope that this research will lead teachers to welcome social justice topics into their classrooms instead of avoiding them. They also suggest that this approach would make it possible for more schools to ensure that every student is being prepared for success.

Matthew Diemer is Associate Professor
