A project proposed by CSHPE faculty members Lisa Lattuca and Jan Lawrence, in partnership with Engineering colleague Cindy Finelli, was included in the first 50 projects to receive $60,000 seed grants in phase one of the M-Cubed program.

The project is titled Catalyzing Interdisciplinary Collaborations: Studying the Impact of M-Cubed on Researchers and Research.

Research suggests that serendipity often plays a role in interdisciplinary research collaborations as individuals with new ideas fortuitously connect with colleagues from disciplines other than their own. This project will explore how a non-peer-reviewed, seeding initiative designed to promote interdisciplinary research affects the interactions and scholarly activities of cooperating faculty members over time. We will use a multi-method design to explore three questions:

1) How does the seeding process shape partnerships;
2) How do the collaborators’ personal and disciplinary perspectives influence their interactions and ultimately, the trajectories of both funded and unfunded projects? and
3) What tangible and intangible outcomes result from the M-Cubed initiative and the activities of those who submitted a project (whether funded or not).

Lisa R. Lattuca is Professor

Janet H. Lawrence is Professor Emeritus
