The NY Times website hosts a blog called Room for Debate in which they invite experts to opine on important questions and issues. On August 16, 2009, they asked "do teachers need education degrees?" and Jeffrey Mirel, David L. Angus Collegiate Chair in Education and professor of history, was one of nine experts invited to share a perspective.

Mirel wrote in favor of education degrees: "Knowledge of subject matter is unquestionably necessary for good teaching, but it is insufficient for being a good teacher. Ed schools can make a difference."

Continuing the discussion, readers have added comments to the blog throughout the week. There are currently more than 500 comments presenting a variety of interesting and thoughtful perspectives.
