Jeffrey Albrecht receives King-Chavez-Parks Future Faculty Fellowship

CPEP doctoral candidate Jeffrey Albrecht received a King-Chavez-Parks Future Faculty Fellowship, awarded by Rackham Graduate School for his dissertation research in Michigan high schools. The King-Chavez-Parks Future Faculty Fellowship Program is funded by the State of Michigan’s KCP Initiative and is intended to increase the pool of traditionally underrepresented candidates pursuing faculty teaching careers in postsecondary education.

The fellowship was awarded for Albrecht’s dissertation research on the psychology of student motivation in high school and how it varies by different measures of social class. He is also investigating the social and individual construction of students’ beliefs regarding the relevance of course lessons to their lives. This work contributes to ongoing efforts by educators to make lessons relevant to adolescents and by researchers to develop interventions that motivate students at-risk for academic failure and dropout to persevere in school. Albrecht’s advisor is Professor Stuart Karabenick.

Over the 2017-2018 school year, Albrecht collected focus group, individual interview, and survey data from a local Title I high school where over 70% of the student body has been classified at-risk according to MI state standards. Currently, Albrecht is conducting mixed methods analyses, and hopes to present findings at the 2019 American Educational Research Association Annual Meeting in Toronto and Society for Research in Child Development in Baltimore.

Applications for the King-Chavez-Parks Future Faculty Fellowship are reviewed by a committee of faculty members affiliated with the Rackham Graduate School with preference given to students with outstanding academic credentials and recommendations. Applicants must present a convincing case for the use of the fellowship and submit a personal statement of purpose indicating a plan to teach or secure an administrative position in a postsecondary position after completion of degree.
