An interview with Dean Elizabeth Birr Moje was featured on the podcast Transforming Learning, produced by Communications by Design (CBD). CBD is an education technology consulting company devoted to supporting teachers' efforts to transform teaching and learning. Their podcasts are hosted by their team of instructional and technology integration coaches. Peter Grostic interviewed Moje about teacher training, education research, the state of literacy learning in the U.S., teacher education enrollment trends, and the mission of the School of Education.

Moje discussed how her own teaching practice led her to study literacy learning and student motivation. Moje’s research, based in Detroit for 21 years, has included the study of youth in school and non-school learning settings. Moje describes how disciplinary literacy became central to her lines of research inquiry.

In her current research, she is developing curricula and pedagogical practices to prepare educators to teach engineering concepts. Moje explains how the Sensors in a Shoebox project prepares youth to investigate their neighborhoods using engineering tools and social science skills. Moje also uses this project to explain how place-based and project-based education leads to meaningful, purposeful learning.

Moje also spoke with Grostic about the work of serving as dean for the School of Education, and how the diversity, inclusion, justice, and equity (dije) mission of the school is central to the school’s efforts. Moje discussed the school’s organizational mission and vision, and what steps the SOE community is taking to realize an ambitious educational vision.

Grostic was also interested in Moje’s take on the declining number of students entering teacher education. Moje explained the efforts that the SOE is taking to draw students to the profession, as well as how the school prepares teacher education students to be capable independent teachers.
