Elizabeth Birr Moje OpEd on investing in teachers published in The Detroit News

An OpEd written by Elizabeth Birr Moje was published in The Detroit News on February 22. The article, “Investing in teachers critical to improving schools,” urged readers to consider the changes necessary for recruiting, training, supporting, and retaining teachers. Beyond proper compensation, professional development, evidence-based tools and materials, and time to plan lessons, she points to the need for teachers to be afforded greater professional judgement and respect.

“Even if we commit the proper funding to support Michigan schools and teachers, we will not be successful until we change perceptions of the work of teaching. … Very few people want to work at unstable jobs for low pay, with little training or support, while experiencing a lack of community trust and respect. We cannot expect professional quality from people we do not treat as professionals,” said Moje.

Elizabeth Birr Moje is George Herbert Mead Collegiate Professor of Education and Arthur F. Thurnau Professor; Dean of the School of Education
