SOE’s Educational Leadership and Policy master’s program has earned a five-year initial accreditation with no revisions and a unanimous vote from the review panel of the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

The newly designed program features internally created performance assessments that develop skills and knowledge in its pre-service principals, aligned to Michigan state standards for building-level certification. During the review process, these assessments were described by CAEP’s lead auditor as "deep, extensive, challenging, and astounding."

According to Maren Oberman, director of the program, “One of the committee members said the program’s inquiry brief was one of the best he had seen, and he could find no weaknesses to probe in the panel review. Another committee member noted feeling a bit overwhelmed by all we have in the program and all we have to do, but said, ‘There's a lot of thought and energy there.’"

Oberman noted that the foundation for the program began with the arrival of Don Peurach and Angeline Spain to the SOE faculty, as well as with the current program faculty including herself and Karl Covert. She also credited Tom Drake, who contributed in key ways to program design and, most importantly, supported the development of the internship program and mentor network; and Emily Jenkins, who in addition to her recruitment work to bring in outstanding students, provides ongoing program support in both design and improvement. The program continues to build on their success, Oberman said. “We hope that the entire SOE community will share in our excitement as we strive to develop an outstanding program in its service to our students, and more importantly, to K-12 students all over the country.”
