On June 19, U-M's Board of Regents approved a recommendation to reappoint Deborah Loewenberg Ball as dean of the School of Education for an additional one- year term. Martha E. Pollack, U-M provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, said that Dean Ball will use this extension to “complete key initiatives currently underway, including programs and practices focused on developing the climate for diversity and inclusiveness in the school."

Dean Ball was first appointed as SOE dean on December 16, 2005. She was reappointed in September 2010 for a term that ends in June 2015. The one-year extension, which will end on June 30, 2016, will bring her service as dean to a total of 10 1⁄2 years.

Pollack said, "The School of Education has made remarkable progress under Dean Ball’s leadership. In addition to spearheading curricular transformation within the school, creating an intensive practice-based focus for teacher education, she has also supported deliberate efforts to promote diversity and equity as core components of the school’s people, practices, programs and, policies. I am grateful to Dean Ball for her dedication and leadership to both the school and the university, and I look forward to working with her."

Following the approval of the extension, Dean Ball said, “I am gratified to have the opportunity to continue working with such an incredible community of faculty, staff, and students. I remain committed to and inspired by the work underway here and look forward to all that we will accomplish during my final two years as dean.” Dean Ball is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Mathematics Society, and the American Educational Research Association, and an elected member of the National Academy of Education. She serves on the National Science Board and the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Board of Trustees, and chairs the Spencer Foundation Board of Directors. Earlier this year, she won the 2014 Edward C. Pomeroy Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teacher Education.

Dean Ball taught elementary school for more than 15 years, and continues to teach mathematics to elementary students every summer.
