In a May 11, 2011, column published in the Holland Sentinel, author Phil Power writes about his impressions of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder's education plan. Power discusses some of the numerous factors affecting the quality of children's education, including "deficits in parenting", cultural norms, and societal changes. Deborah Ball doesn't disagree that may these play important roles in educational outcomes, but says "discussions of culture or environment shouldn’t be excuses for ignoring how much progress can be made by improving schools.”

Deborah Loewenberg Ball is William H. Payne Collegiate Chair, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, and dean of the School of Education.
