On Thursday, April 28, 2011, the Teacher Education Initiative (TEI) will sponsor a special talk by Steven Farr, chief knowledge officer at Teach for America (TFA) and the author of Teaching as Leadership: The Highly Effective Teacher's Guide to Closing the Achievement Gap. Mr. Farr will present his talk from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Tribute Room (room 1322). In it, he will discuss Teach for America’s work to discern what distinguishes teachers whose students in low-income communities achieve dramatic academic growth, as well as TFA’s “Teaching as Leadership” framework for describing effective teaching.

This is an unusual opportunity to learn about one of several efforts going on around the country to identify the features of effective instructional practice and to develop a more nuanced understanding of how organizations external to schools and colleges of education approach this kind of work. During the 2011-2012 academic year, the TEI’s ongoing seminar series will feature a number of speakers engaged in similar efforts; Mr. Farr’s presentation will be a preview of next year’s series. Projects to articulate the work of teaching and identify instructional practices that should be core to initial teacher education are burgeoning around the country, and they are crucially important to the future of the fields of teaching and teacher education.

Please join us for what promises to be an interesting session. Light refreshments will be served.
