Betsy Davis, associate professor and chair of Elementary Teacher Education, has been appointed to the National Research Council’s Committee on Strengthening Science Education through a Teacher Learning Continuum. Under the auspices of the Board on Science Education, in collaboration with the Teacher Advisory Council, the committee will characterize the current state of the learning opportunities and support for learning that exist for science teachers across their careers and across school levels and identify the characteristics of effective learning opportunities for teachers. The committee is charged with investigating a range of questions including how teachers’ learning needs differ by the stage of their careers and level at which they teach, what is known about effective approaches to supporting science teachers’ learning, and what kind of training is needed for teacher educators and providers of professional development. The committee will also be reporting on major gaps and weaknesses in research on teacher development and appraising methods of evaluating the outcomes of teacher development.

Please join me in congratulating Betsy on this important appointment and thanking her for her willingness to serve in this leadership role.
