Cradle to Kindergarten author Christina Weiland travels to Seattle to support early childhood bill

SOE professor Christina Weiland traveled to Seattle to stand alongside Senator Patty Murray as she presented the Child Care for Working Families Act. The Seattle Times’ Education Lab reports that Murray’s bill would increase opportunities for affordable childcare and preschool programs, as well as improve the pay and training for child care workers. Weiland, co-author of Cradle to Kindergarten, explains that “the current system we have is resulting in enormous inequalities.”

In her book, Weiland reveals that a lack of affordable quality child care can negatively affect a child’s opportunities over time. Kindergarten readiness varies widely according to income, she explains, adding that “most of the eventual achievement gap is in place by that first day of kindergarten.”

Christina Weiland is Assistant Professor
