Commencement held on April 30

Tags: deans updates

On Saturday, April 30, 2016, faculty, students, staff, and families and loved ones of our graduates gathered in Hill Auditorium to celebrate the 295 School of Education students who were graduating. It was a wonderful event with terrific remarks offered by student speakers Michelle Kwok and Hugo Lawton and the commencement address delivered by Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, president emerita of Spelman College. We were honored to have two University of Michigan leaders in our platform party: Martha Pollack, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, and Rob Sellers, vice provost for equity, inclusion, and academic affairs. We were equally honored by the participation of alumni and school partners, including Bayane Alem, teacher at Michigan Islamic Academy, Rod Franchi, teacher at Novi High School, Alycia Meriwether, interim superintendent of Detroit Public Schools, Jazz Parks, principal of Tappan Middle School, Kimberly Robertson, teacher at University Prep Science and Math Middle School, and Sheril Simpson, teacher at Ypsilanti Community Schools.

I am grateful for the many faculty, staff, and students who participated in commencement, either as members of the platform party or as volunteers. It was a wonderful day for our graduates and for our SOE community. If you have any feedback about the event, please send it to Kathryn Taylor.
