An article in the August 16, 2012, New York Times reports on the use of videos of teachers in action for the professional development of other teachers. Public school K-12 teachers in Washington DC have access to 80 videos of the district's highest-performing teachers.

The University of Michigan School of Education is indexing about 16,000 videos of fourth- through ninth-grade English and mathematics teachers in six urban districts. Deborah Ball commented that "as much effort needs to be put into how to use this stuff as collecting tons of it."

Deborah Loewenberg Ball is the William H. Payne Collegiate Chair, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, and dean of the School of Education.
