An article posted on the MLive website on May 24, 2012, reports on the progress of the Michigan Council on Educator Effectiveness, including council leader Deborah Loewenberg Ball, in their task of creating a statewide teacher evaluation system. The group is proposing a pilot program that includes three evaluation programs and 12 districts, with a mix or urban, rural, suburban, and charter schools. They are now working to select vendors and school districts with a goal of a ready-to-implement plan by fall.

Ball has consistently said that the assessments should be used to support teachers in their work.

Deborah Loewenberg Ball is the William H. Payne Collegiate Chair, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, and dean of the School of Education.
